Very little remains in Tarsus today of the city that Paul knew. The most important ruins from this time are the house
traditionally believed to be Paul's residence and the well on its grounds. There is a reconstructed Roman Gate, which is probably
the old sea gate to the city, and is today called Cleopatra's Gate.
The church that was built as a memorial to Paul, Tarsus's most famous citizen, reminds us how this great apostle changed
the world through his travels and writings. This church is one of Christianity's most cherished historical remains. Today
Roman Tarsus is buried approximately 10 feet beneath the old part of the city. Near Paul's well a small portion of the Roman
city has been excavated.
